The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and TB Alliance are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking a significant step forward in the global fight against tuberculosis (TB), leprosy, and other mycobacterial diseases. This partnership, a testament to the leadership and vision of Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, exemplifies Indonesia’s and TB Alliance’s commitment to ending TB and other mycobacterial diseases, including through the development and implementation of innovative new treatments that dramatically simplify and improve TB care.
The MOU establishes a framework for collaboration between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and TB Alliance and includes scientific exchange, research and development, local manufacturing and technology transfer, implementation of next generation TB treatments, and health systems strengthening toward the goal of ending TB and other mycobacterial diseases in Indonesia and globally.
“We are proud to embark on a partnership with the Ministry of Health Indonesia, which underscores a shared vision to accelerate the development and implementation of cutting-edge, people-centered treatments for TB and related diseases,” said Dr. Mel Spigelman, President and CEO, TB Alliance. "Indonesia is a leader in implementing innovations to end TB. With its commitment to health innovation and by working closely with key national institutions, we can more quickly develop transformative new therapies to treat TB and other neglected mycobacterial diseases, and ensure they reach the people in Indonesia and around the world who need them.”
"We are excited about this strategic partnership with TB Alliance, which reflects our nation's unwavering commitment to overcoming tuberculosis and related mycobacterial diseases. By supporting the development and implementation of innovative treatments, we aim to improve both outcomes and treatment experiences for people living with these diseases at home and around the world,” said Dr. Rizka Andalucia, Director General for Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. “This work will further strengthen the capacity of the Indonesian health system and our researchers to tackle future challenges, improve the wellbeing of our population, while remaining a leader in global health innovation.”
TB Alliance announced its updated vision for the future of TB treatment at the High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis in November 2024, in Bali, Indonesia. The event, hosted by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, brought together global stakeholders dedicated to ending TB. At the event, TB Alliance introduced its "one by one" approach, charting a path toward an era of drastically shorter TB treatments in which latent TB infections may be treated in one day and active TB infections in one month. Advances in novel therapeutics along with associated technologies included in this MOU will be critical to translate the scientific promise of drugs and regimens currently in development to single-day and single-month cures.
