5 Tips to Keep Your Toddler Healthy – Simple but Scientifically Proven!

87

Taking care of a toddler’s health isn’t just about immunizations or regular doctor visits. There are small, everyday actions that may seem trivial but have a big impact on your child's well-being. Here are 5 seemingly simple yet crucial health tips backed by scientific research.

1. Wash Your Hands Before Breastfeeding or Feeding Your Child

It might sound basic, but according to The Lancet Global Health (2021), when mothers wash their hands with soap before feeding their toddlers, the risk of diarrhea drops by up to 40%.

Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of death in children under five in Indonesia. A simple act like washing hands with soap and running water for 20 seconds can prevent it.

2. Keep Toys Clean

Toddlers often put toys in their mouths. A study published in Pediatrics (2019) found that toy surfaces can harbor harmful bacteria and viruses, including norovirus and rotavirus.

Regular cleaning with warm soapy water or child-safe disinfectants can help prevent gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.

3. Ensure Adequate and Regular Sleep

Sleep is not just rest time—it’s when the body produces growth hormones and strengthens the immune system. According to Sleep Medicine Reviews (2020), toddlers who sleep less than 10 hours a day are more prone to behavioral issues and reduced immunity.

Tips: create a consistent bedtime routine, avoid screens at least an hour before sleep, and keep the sleep environment calm and dark.

4. Don’t Force Your Toddler to Eat

Picky eater? Don’t force it. Research shows that pressuring a child to eat may actually decrease their appetite and contribute to unhealthy eating habits in the long run.

A 2021 article in Appetite emphasizes the importance of “responsive feeding”—feeding based on the child’s hunger and fullness cues—for healthy growth and development.

5. Morning Sunlight Exposure

Vitamin D is crucial for bone growth and a strong immune system. Early morning sunlight (before 9 AM) helps the body produce natural vitamin D.

The Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology (2018) found that children with little sun exposure are more likely to develop vitamin D deficiency and growth problems.

Small habits like handwashing, cleaning toys, ensuring good sleep, feeding responsively, and morning sun exposure aren’t just “nice to have”—they’re essential and scientifically proven to support your toddler’s health. Don’t underestimate the power of the little things!
