In an effort to enhance awareness regarding rabies cases, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia has issued Circular Letter Number HK.02.02/C/508/2025. Rabies, which is an acute infectious disease affecting the central nervous system, is caused by the rabies virus and transmitted through the saliva and bites of rabid animals (GHPR).

Rabies Case Statistics in Indonesia

  • Rabies has spread to nearly all parts of the world, resulting in over 55,000 deaths each year.
  • In Indonesia, out of 38 provinces, 26 provinces have been identified as rabies-endemic areas.
  • Recent data indicates that 185,359 cases of GHPR and 122 deaths due to rabies in humans were reported in 2024. As of March 7, 2025, there have been 13,453 cases of GHPR and 25 deaths.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes the importance of educating the public about rabies and the preventive measures that can be taken. The community is encouraged to be more vigilant regarding rabid animals and to promptly report any bite cases to the nearest health facilities.

With the issuance of this circular letter, it is hoped that all parties can actively participate in the prevention and control of rabies in Indonesia. Vigilance and prompt action can save lives and prevent the spread of this disease.
